The Pub

The ‘Belle Freehouse’ is situated in the picturesque village of Bassingbourn, just eight miles from the historical City of Cambridge, 3 miles from Royston and situated within easy reach of the A10 corridor, the A1M & M11 motorways into London.

‘The Belle’ is named in tribute to the iconic B-17 ‘Memphis Belle’, which was stationed in Bassingbourn during World War 2 and which was later subject of the Hollywood blockbuster movie of the same name.

‘The Belle’ is an eclectic mix of both contemporary and traditional features, that blend perfectly. At the heart of the pub is the log burning stove that is both warming and welcoming. The purpose built bar has been hand crafted and is the focal part of the pub, offering real ales, lagers, fine wines, an extensive range of gins, an array of malt whiskeys and a large variety of spirits & liqueurs.

History

The B17 Flying Fortress ‘Memphis Belle’ arrived in Bassingbourn on Oct 14 1942. She was stationed there until May 17 1943. The Belle was one of 12,750 B-17′s built by the Boeing Aircraft Co. The Belle was the most famous because she was the first heavy bomber in Hitler’s European war theatre to complete 25 combat missions and keep her entire crew alive. The command generals had set 25 missions as an incentive for air crews to go home. Morale was extremely low because 80% of the bombers were shot down during the first three months of America’s combat flights over Europe.

In late 1942 – early 1943 Hollywood film Director, William Wyler came to Bassingbourn, and made a combat documentary called ‘Memphis Belle’; it was said that this film helped to keep America in the war.

History-2

Later in 1943 the Memphis Belle and her crew would complete their 26th and final mission; to fly the Belle home and embark upon a 76-day war bond tour of the USA, encouraging the people of America to buy War Bonds and support the continued efforts of the American Military.

Today the Memphis Belle is being restored at the Wright-Patterson AFB, in the USA. Declared by the US Air Force as a national treasure The Belle will never fly again, but will be restored to her former glory for people to see. Though she will never be seen in the skies over England ever again, her spiritual home and where her history was made, will always be on the runways and perry track of Bassingbourn.
